Handicapped children are finding new freedom on horseback at the Handicapped
Equestrian Learning Program, Inc., (HELP) Center. Since 1984, HELP has
grown from a humble pilot program to a member facility of the North
American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA).
Riding therapy has been utilized by centers throughout the United States
for over twenty years. It is a proven method to exercise, mobilize and
motivate the mind and body. It emphasizes the rider’s abilities, not

HELP’s certified instructors work closely with other professionals
and parents to individualize lessons to maximize each rider’s abilities.
This team effort challenges riders to learn and use horsemanship skills.
Safety is a major concern. Each student is taught by an instructor
and aided by leaders and sidewalkers as needed. The horses for this
program have been carefully schooled and are exceptionally gentle and
loving.
Types of disabilities do not exclude an individual’s participation.
Currently riders with cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, autism,
and visual impairments are experiencing the joys of riding and warm
bond between horse and rider.
HELP’s successes are not miracles, but result from the caring and cooperation
of many people. Riders, families, volunteers, and sponsors are having
amazing results. If you have the time, talent, or treasure to become
